In addition to behavioural and medical treatments, bariatric surgeries constitute a powerful option to ameliorate diabetes in patients affected by severe obesity. Bariatric surgery is an appropriate treatment for people with T2DM and obesity not achieving recommended treatment targets with medical therapies.

Patients with diabetes have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Patients with diabetes have a higher perioperative risk. They are more likely because of their disease to require surgery and those undergoing surgery are likely to be less well controlled and to have complications from their diabetes.

For severely obese patients with higher than normal blood sugar or pre-diabetic, bariatric surgery can reduce or eliminate the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. For patients who already have Type 2 diabetes, the surgery can dramatically reduces its severity and, in some cases, cure the person of diabetes.

Bariatric surgery results in significant weight loss and remission of diabetes in most patients. After surgery, glycemic control is restored by a combination of enforced caloric restriction, enhanced insulin sensitivity, and increased insulin secretion.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is frequently reported to achieve glycemic control and even cure type 2 diabetes in obese patients by reducing insulin resistance. They suggested this improvement might have been caused by the terminal ileum through an insulin-independent action.

Avoid alcohol for the first six months after bariatric surgery. When you get permission to start drinking alcohol again, avoid carbonated beverages and sugary drink mixers. Remember that after surgery, even small amounts of alcohol can cause intoxication and low blood sugar. Be aware of the calorie content of alcohol.

Most people who have colon cancer surgery recover without any problems. These people go home within 2-to-4 days. A small number of patients may have a slower recovery and need to stay a little longer.

A bowel resection is a surgery to remove any part of the bowel. This includes the small intestine, large intestine, or rectum. Doctors use it to treat diseases and blockages of the large intestine (colon). Bowel diseases and conditions can put your life at risk.

Bowel resection requires general anaesthesia. You may stay in the hospital for 4 to 7 days or as long as 2 weeks after surgery. Sometimes the two parts of the colon or rectum cannot be reattached, so the surgeon performs a colostomy.

You may have very loose stools in your colostomy bag for a while. In time your stools may become firmer, but they will be less solid than before your surgery. You may also have a lot of gas pass into your colostomy bag in the weeks after surgery. This will decrease as you heal.

People can live without a colon, but may need to wear a bag outside their body to collect stool

Colectomy usually takes between 1 and 4 hours.

When you have diverticulitis, the inflamed pouches most often cause pain in the lower left side of your abdomen. The pain is usually severe and comes on suddenly, though it can also be mild and get worse over several days. The intensity of the pain can change over time.

Right after the surgery, you'll be able to drink fluids. Recovery from a laparoscopic surgery is faster than with an open resection. You'll also have less pain and smaller scars. After 1 to 2 weeks, you may be able to get back to most of your normal routine, such as walking and working.

The pain may not just be in the area of the hernia; it can radiate to your hip, back, leg — even to the genitals. As your hernia gets worse, many aspects of your life will get worse right along with it. Even if it isn't painful (yet), the sensation and pressure may cause you to avoid certain activities.

Prevention tips for hernia 1. not smoking 2. seeing your doctor when you're sick to avoid developing a persistent cough 3. maintaining a healthy body weight 4. avoiding straining during bowel movements or urination 5. lifting objects with your knees and not your back 6. avoiding lifting weights that are too heavy for you

Guidelines to qualify for gastric bypass surgery

• Efforts to lose weight with diet and exercise have been unsuccessful.
• Your body mass index (BMI) is 40 or higher.
• Your BMI is 35 or more and you have a serious weight-related health problem, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or severe sleep apnea.

In some cases, a second surgery to repair — or redo — a gastric bypass may be appropriate. Because of these risks, gastric bypass surgery usually isn't redone if you regain weight because of poor diet or exercise habits.

Expect your weight loss to slow down after 18 months.
It's also important to note that when you undergo other weight loss procedures, such as gastric bypass, you'll lose the majority of your excess weight in only 12 months.

Drinking Alcohol
A: Alcohol is not recommended after bariatric surgery. Alcohol contains calories but minimal nutrition and will work against your weight loss goal.

Four to six weeks This entire process aims to let the stomach heal and patients usually return to work and their normal routine four to six weeks after the surgery.
